This common garden herb is very acceptable to horses and a much-enjoyed
addition to their feed. It is often added to commercial feeds (e.g. pellets)
to make them
highly acceptable, to mask less desirable flavors, to give the purchaser
something nice to smell and to enable the manufacturer to put “with
added herbs” on the bag as a strong commercial selling point! It is an
appetizer, digestive, carminative and stimulant and is therefore a
valuable colic treatment or supplement for horses with colic tendency.
Peppermint is particularly antifungal compared with the more ordinary
mints and is also a more powerful carminative and digestive. It is more
highly flavoured and is the reason that horses are so fond of mint sweets.
